Alternative energy solutions paving the way
October 10, 2007 |
Did you know that an area 200 miles square covered with solar panels could provide all the electricity the world needs? Thats’ pretty heavy stuff.
Its’ no secret that I spend many waking hours worrying about the environment and what the future holds for it and the children of tomorrow. So when an event like the BP Solar Decathlon comes along, I take notice.
Every second year at the National Mall in Washington D.C., 20 university teams from around the world design, build and operate livable, every-efficient, and completely solar-powered houses. This year’s event takes place starting tomorrow (Oct. 11) and ends October 19th.
As part of their commitment to discovering cost effective, clean energy solutions for everyday living BP is sponsoring this special event. The are one of the main corporate sponsors, partners with the United States department of energy and, ironically, the only energy company that has participated.
BP produces more than 200 MW of solar technology every year, their jointly-owned Nerefco wind farm generates enough zero-carbon energy to power 13,000 average homes. Wind can potentially provide around a tenth of the world’s power. That would cut down dioxide emissions by a billion tons a year.
BP has also been a leading source of information on alternative energy solutions and educating the masses on the issues at hand. They created a website for people to understand how they can reduce their impact on the environment every day using a concept called the greencurve.Wonder where you are on the greencurve?
Check out how you can reduce your impact on the environment every day.
BP has also created a blog where all of the teams as well as the on-site reporter can write posts and update the rest of the world throughout the competition. Check out the site at: www.bpsolardecathlon.com
I would personally like to wish all 20 teams the best of luck and I hope you all come up with some innovative ways to protect the future of my 2 neices and nephew (and all their friends… and any kids I might have someday..;) )
