I'm only lightly skilled in PHP, but the way I see it is, everything is there if you need it, and its' up to you which functions you call when you are coding your theme. I used to do the same as you. My blog was all custom. I had a very basic admin panel and used PHPMyAdmin for almost everything else, my video section is all edited through PHPMyAdmin. I made the move to Wordpress mostly for things like trackbacks and other link related perks. But also because I spent way too much time on development and tweaking features instead of writing good content. Currently its’ linklove, but I’m testing both.
