5 Common mistakes made by webmasters today

August 10, 2007 |

Sometime I hang around these “Web Development” sites where these “designers” talk about different things that annoy me. From time to time I lash out at people. Other times I just sit back and blog. Read on if you want to see me get prissy on computers.

Do not post about how you have not been posting - I try not to be too guilty of this. It just wastes people’s time. And they may not even notice if you don’t mention it. See the end rule.

Do not post coming soon pages - I am guilty of this. Yes. Maintenance pages sometimes are a necessity, but please, don’t post these things if you don’t absolutely have to. They are often discarded from our memory. People do not remember to check back no matter how nicely you ask.

Dont bee making spleling and gramir mistuks - We’re probably all a little guilty of this. It just makes you look dumb. Theres a good guide for grammar here.

Do not make people upgrade to view your site - You’d be surprised how many people are downright snotty about what browser or screen size the visitor should use. This is never a good way to do things. You’re site must be accessible to everyone. Some people use smaller screen sizes because they have vision problems, Some people prefer a different browser than you do.

Talk to the readers, not the editor - I’m not saying that you should be pretending there are readers there when there aren’t (asking questions to visitors that aren’t there is a bit of a no-no). but posting to-do lists and things of that sort make it clear you are talking to your webpage and not to the person reading it.
